Dewa Sanzan

Although nowadays Dewa Sanzan is directed by a shrine (Sanjingôsaiden 三神合祭殿), it was a territory of Buddhism believes that was so well considered that during Kamakura Period (1885-1333) it was used as a religious school that is close to our conception of "university", to study the "8 Buddhisms" (hasshûkengaku 八宗見学). The eight Buddhisms consisted of: Tendai sect 天台宗, Shingon sect 真言宗, Kusha sect 倶舎宗, Jôjitsu sect 成実宗, Ritsu sect 律宗, Hossô sect 法相宗, Sanron sect 三論宗, and Kegon sect 華厳宗. The several buildings and outdoor enclaves in the three mounts of Dewa were then used as classrooms.
